The quality of art displayed at Gallery East Art Center could give national shows a run for their money, according to organizers. "You don't need to go to New York to see art," said Gallery East member Bob Kuberberg. "We have it right here in Marion County."
The Gallery East Art Center is located in Belleview at 11761 SE U.S. Highway 27/441. An artists' reception for The Villages Art League Invitational Art Show was held Friday, January 9, 2015. Judge David D'Alessandris was present to announce the winners and distribute ribbons.
Winners: First Place: "Brooke" by Roger Sherman (oil); Second Place: "Daily Bread" by Cindy Martel (colored pencil); Third Place: Drawing of bowl with fruit by Judy Kraft (pastel); Honorable Mention: "The Dancing Ladies" by RoseMarie Langworthy (oil).
"The body of work sums up the current genres in the art world," D'Alessandris said. "There's not a piece in this show that can't be in a national juried show."
League President Nancy Dias said the event raised the bar for future collaborations. "It's quite an honor to have your own invitational," Dias said. "It's new to me and it's new to the Art League. I'm hoping this exhibit sparks an interest in more members to participate in things like this."
Event Co-chairwoman Lee Asta said she was greatly impressed by the quality of submissions for the show. "I was in awe of the talent that was displayed, and the judge was very impressed also," Asta said. "They were all very different. It's a varied show in terms of subject and media."
First-place winner Roger Sherman said he was excited to see the show come together. "I'm impressed with the quality of work (in the show)," Sherman said. "I think it's great for the gallery and great for the area."
The Gallery East Villages Art League Invitational Show will hang throughout January. Viewing is open to the public Tuesday-Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 1:30 pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.
